Greetings
The Sons of the American Legion (SAL) was the
creation of a veteran group who was planning for the future. After WW1, the American Legion is formed to look after issues
and concerns of our newest veteran population and their families. By 1932, the nation hadn't added anymore eligible war
time veterans to the nation's roles. We had been a nation at peace and growing until the Depression. Legionnaires wanted
to secure the place of the Legion to carry on their programs, etc., and thus sanctioned the SAL in 1932. Unknown to all at
the time, looming on the event horizon was WWII. The sons of WWI vet's would be called to save a world in peril.
When these men and women returned home, the Legion had a huge resurgence of membership
with old posts reinvigorated and new post chartered in towns all across the country and world wide. The SAL still existed
but was not really on the radar of most posts. But, as post membership aged again and numbers began to dwindle, the SAL had
a resurgence as well in the 80"s. Post's bring on board local squadrons and allow their sons and grandsons to assist
in all of the great programs of the American Legion.
The Ohio SAL
has been a leader in both membership and in support of the Child Welfare Foundation. They have always been cognizant of the
needs of the veterans in Ohio and led the charge to support our progenitors.
Within our own squadron, David L. Lupien has
taken a role of serving our local veterans and assisting with historical, patriotic and educational programs that honor the
role of our veterans have played in local, regional, state, national and international history, as well as, provide a permanent
record of their service. He was instrumental in creating our Memorial Rolls of Honor and POW lists now displayed in the Veterans
Memorial in Montpelier. He created the list that is being used to create the Veterans Wall Memorial Park. He has inventoried
our cemeteries to address issues of making sure that our veterans grave sites were identified and marked appropriately. He
has developed educational programming for our youth. And, he has recorded the part played by so many in various histories
and profiles sketches over the last 25 years. In 2008, David was honored with the Ohio Detachment, SAL selecting him their
Son of the Year.
The SAL is open to any son, grandson, or stepson of a legion member or veteran who died on active duty. We look forward to
anyone who desires to honor and serve our veterans to become a member of Squadron 284. Current annual Dues are $10.00. Contact David
Lupien (419-636-6082) for more information.
